i just joined today, and it seems that the same posts have been marked as *new* for the last 12 hours. is this a failure on behalf of the site to update properly, or are conventional nerds more quiet than i anticipated? or are there some "additional variables* i'm overlooking?

``also, the "most popular" viewing appears to be a bit of a farce (they count your OWN views of YOURSELF, there's a trick) and the time-stamp on postings is off (in spite of them requiring that you put in your location.)

Welcome to the site.
With regards to some of your comments/observations.
1) Un-read posts are marked as new for each member (until that member has viewed the post)...so a post could be days old, but 'new to you'. Once read, the post should then change from a new status, although if you are keeping your browser open, it's possible a cached image is confusing the situation.
2) The popularity section does allow someone to 'vote' for themselves...but only with a single vote per day. (It's not actually a "vote", but rather than bore everyone with details, we'll leave it at that.) While we could put in place a filter to restrict people from giving themselves a little jumpstart in the popularity area, we don't really see it as an issue of concern. There are a lot of ways to help yourself in the popularity area, including just logging in everyday. Logged-in members are much more likely to be viewed by other members (since they appear in the Who's Online sections...and since search results display members based in part on when they last logged in).
3) Lastly, the timestamp on posts is based on our servers, and not on where everyone is located. If timestamps were based on location, then forum posts that were posted minutes apart could appear to be posted hours apart...if the members posting were in different timezones.
By the way, location is required so that our system can identify when someone is attempting to lie to other members about their location...and so that members are able to focus their time and attention on people in the area they are interested in.
For example, if a Nigerian prince signs up and says he is in Alabama, we can see if he is in fact in Alabama (...or if he is lying and is still in Nigeria dealing with all the paperwork required to distribute his vast wealth to individuals worldwide).
Back to the issues at hand though. We encourage members to get in touch with us anytime a problem is observed. We are constantly updating the network (and the individual sites in the network)...so we definitely have a few bugs appear every now and then. Sometimes a simple change can cause a problem that we did not anticipate. The easiest way to report a problem is to use the Contact Us link in the navigation area, although we also review the Site Suggestions posts for all the sites in the network (and we recommend that technical problems as well as suggestions be posted in that area).
Please let us know if you spot any problems with any of the areas we have commented on, or any other areas of the site/network.

This place really is quiet sometimes. I think it might be because school is in session. We are all involved in classes. (or atleast I should be, but I am bored now)
